Hi all,
So it’s all go, go, go over here. As you might know, the new book is out, but what I’m most excited to share this month is that I have joined Australia’s largest Foundation, the Minderoo Foundation in a new role, with a snazzy sector-building title of Head of Advocacy for Effective Philanthropy.
Australian philanthropy really is in a ‘moment’ right now - a Government commitment to helping double giving by 2030, a Productivity Commission Inquiry into philanthropy which will share a number of recommendations for legislative change (think more giving vehicles, harmonized national regulations, etc.), and a sector looking to lead a values-driven national dialogue around what giving means and how we can weave this into a true cultural identity for Australia.
It’s exciting, and I’m looking forward to playing an enabling/shaping role in the broader scheme of things. Much more to follow here!
I'm also doing a fun collaborative set of articles this week on my Future Philanthropy blog to celebrate International Data Week '23 (23rd - 26th October).
Stoked to gather guest articles from some of the best in the business such as Tim Paris from Dataro, Meena Das from Namaste Data, and Alexandra Pittman, PhD from ImpactMapper. Together we will touch on a raft of data-focused topics that impact the philanthropic sector including equity, visualization, natural language processing, a renaissance for data co-ops, and the potential for adding our data to the balance sheet (spoiler - this will open a world of leveraged opportunities).
The first article of the week is below - always happy to hear your thoughts and as always will reward them with the inside lane on some exciting sector opportunities …

What I’m Writing
Unlocking Hidden Value: Data on Nonprofit Balance Sheets (6 min read)
International Data Week is here! Kicking off a week-long series of collaborative articles with some of my stellar peers in the sector, we talk about data on the nonprofit balance sheet.
While calculating value is an ongoing project, in the end, the approach is like saying, "We value our data, and we're using it to do good things."
Keep checking out the Future Philanthropy blog for a daily insight into the world of nonprofit data where we will cover data equity, visualization, NLP, and the renaissance of data co-ops!
Book Update
I was proud to see Nonprofit Moneyball finally released into the literary wild about two weeks ago. To those who have purchased a copy so far - thank you, I truly hope you enjoy it, and of course, I would love to hear what you think!
Stoked that it has already achieved bestseller status on Amazon in both the U.S. and here in Australia. So here's to the conversations ahead, and the ideas it hopefully spurs for your work on the front lines of change.
I have a number of deals on my website if of interest - ryanginard.com/publications
Virtual Book Launch: The new book tour begins in earnest next week. Stop 1 is a virtual event with PILYTIX CEO, Jim Dries, as we discuss a key cornerstone of the book and that’s how your fundraising team demystifies the use of nonprofit tech. Will be a fun discussion with plenty of time for Q&A.
Hope you can join us! The event is free with a few special book deals :)
