500 Free Industry Badges for SXSW Sydney!!!
Hi all,
So here we are again, 2 years on from the last new book, we have another new book, new ideas, and new conversations to be had as a result of said ideas.
Nonprofit Moneyball is out next week (October 3rd), and I can’t thank everyone enough who purchased a copy during this pre-sale period. Your support has already made it an Amazon bestseller in both the U.S. and Australia and across a range of categories.
Most importantly it has already stoked a number of new conversations about what effective team building can be and what our impact could look like if we provided these critical roles with more intentional training, support, and the full arsenal of fundraising tools to secure transformative gifts. Check out some of those conversations below…
I know my writing is traditionally geared towards what the future of our sector might look like, but I discuss all the things available to us now, which can be adopted right away, and finally give us a shot at securing that future we all strive towards, today.
At the end of the day, fundraising is a team sport and I want you to win, heck I need you to win, because many people struggling out there need our support and services more than ever.
Keep up the important work!
Ryan
What I’m Writing (& Saying)
#DPPOfficeHours (28 min video)
#DPPOfficeHours is a program of the Donor Participation Project, a fundraiser community of 3,300+ who meet monthly to learn together how to grow donor participation in our nonprofits. I had a great chat with DPP Founder Louis Diez about the new book and other in-the-weed stuff that we all no doubt geek out to.
Ange Postecoglou And ‘Nonprofit Moneyball’ (10 min read)
I have loved 'big Ange' ever since he went on to lead my beloved Brisbane Roar to back-to-back A-League titles. He is a great leader from whom nonprofits could learn a great deal - here I deconstruct a few examples of his approach, character, and values through the lens of my 'Nonprofit Moneyball' thesis and make the case that post-Spurs, his calling might in fact be in the social sector...
The Role Of Critical Fundraising In Movement Building (6 min read)
Introducing Jonathan O’Brien! One of our Fundraise for Australia Fellows and Lead Organiser for YIMBY Melbourne.
We speak to Jonathan about the tension he faces with fundraising and scale, his background in the arts, and his amazing data project ‘The Beige Index.’
RKD Group Thinkers Podcast Appearance (36 min video)
"The most dangerous thing right now is leaning into the status quo of fundraising, because it's not getting us the solutions we need."
On this episode of Group Thinkers, I joined Justin McCord and Ronnie Richard to discuss rejecting the status quo for nonprofit planning.

Fundraising Tip Of The Week/Month/eNews #24
Portfolio construction: This isn’t one for the fundraisers per se, but one that anyone who sets the goals should be aware of. Don’t just give a fundraiser a portfolio of 50 - 100 prospects or a mish-mash of inherited prospects from other fundraisers when they start their role.
Give them a 60% full portfolio of 30 warm leads and let them build up the rest of the portfolio over the next twelve months as part of their goals.
Having a fundraiser help craft their portfolio provides extra buy-in and will ultimately benefit their fundraising ‘persona’. Give them a chance to be successful and yield the benefits of this early trust-building tactic.

What I’m Reading
Australian Cohesion Index 2023 (72 pages - so a long, long read!)
Social isolation is at epidemic levels. It's an intersectional issue that needs to be elevated in the national dialogue and the social sector needs to be at the forefront. But therein lies the problem - volunteering is down, donations are down, civic engagement is down and so is belonging to social groups.
The Scanlon Foundation's new report is important reading and illustrates the sheer scale of the problem, and most importantly the value of community-building.. It brings together an extraordinary depth of data, knowledge and analysis to provide a robust picture of Australia today.
I would recommend folks check it out and start chatting about it more in our daily discourse, or better yet, get out there and get involved in your community!
Check out the full report here - Would love to hear your thoughts on this one!
