Hi all,
It's hard to believe that it has already been a year since my family and I embarked on our new adventure in Australia!
As we reflect on this milestone, we can't help but appreciate all of our friends (both new and old) in helping us transition back and the incredible opportunity that lies ahead.
Relocating home has brought about many changes and adjustments, and Australia has certainly offered a different experience from what we were accustomed to in the US.
Professionally, the move has presented us with exciting opportunities for growth and development. The country's emerging (yet dynamic) philanthropic landscape has opened doors to unique ventures and collaborations already, and I'm thrilled to just be part of it.
Australia's emphasis on work-life balance have truly made a positive impact on our lives and ultimately what we decide to work on (the 2-hour California commute has been replaced with a 15 min bike ride).
As we look ahead, we are filled with gratitude for what is now my second chapter in Australia. It has already expanded our family's horizons, challenged us to adapt, and enriched our lives in countless ways.
Here's to many more adventures and opportunities on this amazing journey!
Ryan
Book Update (& A New One On The Way!)
곧 출시됩니다! - Future Philanthropy is going global! A new Korean edition of the book will be released in the next year on the back of a foreign rights deal just signed. How cool is that!?
New Book Incoming - I’m thrilled to share that the first draft is in for my new book ‘Nonprofit Moneyball’. This book seeks to build on the concept I introduced in Future Philanthropy on how to build the best fundraising teams possible by looking at the skills, psychology and tools that are hallmarks of today’s most successful fundraisers. Much more to come with a late September release tentatively penciled in.
…and no Brad Pitt will not be playing me in the movie adaptation. Unless he wants to.
What I’m Writing (& What I’ve Been Saying!)
A New Vision For Nonprofits Or Just More Temporary Scaffolding Of Change? (8 min read)
What will the new Apple Vision Pro do for the nonprofit world (if anything)? #AR is indeed the sizzle but is the steak the neurotechnology and possibilities of a new ROI for our work - that being a Return on Immersion?
Better Conference Moderators Equals Better Nonprofit Conversations. (8 min read)
We are totally underutilizing the role of moderator when we put together event & conference panels. It really is doing a disservice to the amazing voices that we invite to take the stage to articulate the sectors impact?
Nonprofit Moneyball: Recruiting and Coaching Your Winning Fundraising Team. (71 min video + CFRE credits!)
I recently appeared on the DonorSearch Webcast series ‘Philanthropic Masterminds’ with Jay Frost discussing how good fundraisers are hard to find, difficult to retain, and expensive to replace. Much of the discussion was around taking the time to identify the people with the right skills and complementary experiences and partnering them with the organizations that best represented their values and passions, gave them the training to hit the ground running. Check out the conversation for hints and tips on how small to medium size nonprofits can compete for top fundraising talent and boost fundraising results long term.
Optimism is the fuel that pushes humanity forward (1 min read)
Not all types of optimism are the same. A resilient kind of optimism is essential for any fundraiser, but a dispositional optimism is required if we are going to leave our world in a better place than we inherited it.
I was asked by The Center for Optimism recently about what makes me optimistic and the linked article was my thoughts on it.
Fundraise For Australia Updates
What an absolute thrill to see 18 months of work come to fruition last month with the first session, of the first cohort for Fundraise for Australia. Really proud of this amazing group of new and emerging fundraisers who are no doubt going to go on and raise millions of dollars for the communities they serve.
Thanks to all that have contributed to this programs success thus far. This really is the start of something transformative for our social sector, and I'm excited to see the impact!
Productivity Commission Submission: Let's be clear - we can't double philanthropy in Australia without investing in fundraisers.
That's why Fundraise for Australia made a submission to the Productivity Commission's national inquiry into philanthropy - because fundraisers have been largely absent from the narrative and more alarmingly, the broader conversation.
So while our contribution was largely about awareness of the important work fundraisers play in the social sector, I would hope that the commission would see the potential to invest and further professionalize the field, because the ROI on a great fundraiser is more dollars flowing into our communities.
Check out the 263 submissions to the inquiry here…
What I’m Sharing
Fundraiser Appreciation Day Australia: Fundraiser Appreciation Day for Australia this year is on Friday 7th July.
The observance occurs on the first Friday of July, which is the first Friday following the end of the financial year in Australia, and the end of a very important month for charities nationwide. June is the time when we see more donation revenue come through than any other month.
Fundraising professionals play a vital role in supporting charitable organizations and nonprofit causes, channeling resources to where they are most needed. Their commitment and expertise in mobilizing funds are essential for driving social change, tackling societal challenges, and creating a better future for all.

Shoutout
Congrats to Evan Wildstein on the release of his new book - The Nonprofiteer's Fundraising Field Guide: 30 Practical Ways to Boost Philanthropy Through Servant-Leadership. Evan invited me to contribute a quote to support the launch, and after reading the book was compelled to share the following…
“Wildstein succinctly distils what it means to be an authentic servant leader in philanthropy in this refreshing new resource for the social sector. If you are feeling stuck and seeking direction in your nonprofit career, let this be the map that guides you out of the woods and towards fundraising success.”
